SISTERHOOD

SISTERHOOD

If you’re lucky, you’re born with sisters.

And if you’re even luckier, your sisters are your best friends.

My mom has, well, she had, three sisters. Yesterday, we said goodbye to one of them. She wasn’t just a sister to my mom, she was her best friend.

My mom is superclose to her sisters. As the oldest, it was planted into my mom’s psyche to take care and protect her sisters. Even though it was expected at first, kindred relationships bloomed and life-long bonds blossomed.

I love this explanation of the sibling bond by Jeffrey Kugler: “Our parents leave us too early; our spouse and our children come along too late. Our siblings are the only ones who are with us for the entire ride.”

And what a ride it was for my mom and her sisters - losing their brothers and parents, dorming as elementary kids, moving to America, getting married, losing babies, having children, owning homes, near-fatal accidents, fights, graduations, birthdays, holidays, cancer, death, promotions, and so on.

My mom and her sisters didn’t have perfect relationships, but they did show us how perfect the bond of sisterhood can be. How lucky are they. And how lucky are we to continue on their legacy of sisterhood.
